Newfound Sands · Bungalo Village
On the quiet west shore of Newfound Lake — among the clearest, cleanest lakes in New England — a cluster of thirty-four summer cottages has gathered by the water for over a century.
When the railroad reached Bristol from Franklin in 1848, it opened the lake to summer visitors. Farmers took in guests at first; by the 1870s, hotels lined the shore. In the 1920s, W. F. Darling laid out a village of cottages here — first "Hiland Park," then the "Bungalo Village" of thirty-eight cozy, well-equipped bungalows and a main lodge at its heart.
The lodge still stands and the beach is still shared. In 2005 the colony became Newfound Sands, a shorefront condominium of thirty-four individually owned cottages — though everyone still likes to call it Bungalo Village. A century on, it remains what it always was: a simple, friendly place to spend a summer on the lake.
